I have been several times told to write Burkina The Revist both in English and Spanish, but all that times I have rejected the idea. My English is not that good, sorry. I don’t dare to do it. Further more, my jokes are not so good in Spanish, so you can imagine that they are hardly going to make any sense in English. But for once, and dedicated to all the nice people living in Cuerva, Toledo, I am making the effort of writting a post in Shakespeare’s language, which is well known and recognized around the world, not without apoligizing in advance for all my mistakes, kicks to the dictionary, punches to the grammar and bizarre sentence with no sense at all.
And let me tell you that I do it only because, if not, the hilarious joke by my dear friend Nick Hammond, will lost in translation… As a consequence, I nearly died laughing.
The thing is we both were having a coffee and a smoke in our hotel’s small garden, in the morning, before going to the Intertabac show. That’s a very pleasent moment between these three crazy and rushing days and perfect if Nick, and his fine sense of humor, is beside. I love Nick’s laughter. Is sticky. You cannot help laughing and I am quite sure that all the Cigar Journal team will agree with me that the Intertabac days would never be the same without him.
In the garden, two young German women were doing their chores, moving from one side to the other like little lab mice. One was clearing away the tables and the other was sweeping the fallen leaves from the trees back and forth with a noisy, almost annoying, leaf-blowing machine. Nick had a puff of his cigar and discreetly, as if he didn’t want me to hear him, whispered almost in my ear:
– This might be the famous German blowjob.
I almost drowned with my coffee and started to laugh and cough, at the same time, and more, during the whole day, like those annoying songs that you cannot help repeating and repeating, the joke came back to my mind tearing me a smile.
It still does.

I have only read the first chapter, where all starts with a bowl of shrimp, with Alejandro Turrent in Mexico, and I liked it very much. One of the things that I admire most in a person is the ability to laugh at everything, but especially at oneself. A virtue that adorns Nick Hammond, which he shares generously around with everyone, and which is the undoubted proof of his brilliant intelligence.
I read the first one, «Around the world in 80 cigars. The travels of an epicure» and it is fantastic. Not only laughs, but for sure that it is a more than an amusing and interesting book for cigar lovers… And haters, too. Why not?

Please, go on. Only English, by the moment, but you can always improve reading a book written in good English language. I do! Meanwhile Nick carry on with the translation (come on you bloody lazy Brit!).
My father, Luis Blanco Vila, journalist, writer and professor, always said: «Friends buy the book». I didn’t, I have to confess, sorry dad, but trust me that I insisted in paying for it. We were in the Cigar Journal booth the last day when Nick gave me a copy already signed. In the dedication, he wrote:
«Javier, you will never forget the German blowjob! Much love. Nick«.
Thank you, Nick. For sure, I will never forget that moment and the joke and that’s because now I have to explain your dedication at home to my wife. I am doing it in English. Maybe she won’t understand it and get angry with me but, If not, the joke loses in translation. And that would be a shame.
